Anonymous Proxy Lists - Who Owns the Free Proxies?

We all know it really, when we see web sites constantly updating with free anonymous proxy lists. New ones seem to be added every day, isn't it nice of people to pay huge bandwidth charges to let complete strangers surf anonymously on the internet?
Well the simple fact is that they generally don't, the majority of owners of these proxies have no intention of using them as free proxies. It's simple they didn't patch their server, they'd didn't quite set up Squid properly, they made a mistake somewhere down the line and suddenly their server has been opened up to the not unsubstantial crowd of surfers who want to use their proxy to surf the internet with.
Why do people use these proxies?
Well several reasons really, some think it gives them complete anonymity on the internet (which it really doesn't) and some people want to use them to bypass some local firewall which stops them accessing Facebook. Then there are those stuck in countries who censor and filter the entire internet for their citizens, saving their people from the evils of You tube and the like. Proxies help you do all these things to an extent.
There are a few problems with this even if you get over the obviously moral one of taking advantage of someone and using their server without permission. The main practical one is that unless you catch a very new free proxy - your surfing will be extremely slow as you share it with thousands of others. All the free anonymous proxies end up either falling over, overrun their bandwidth limit or the poor unfortunate systems administrator realising what's going on!
The other really good reason to stay well clear of these anonymous proxies is that a lot of them are simply traps to utilise the fact that you browse in clear text with HTTP and a proxy is a great place to gather lots of personal identity information. Saves the hackers going to look for victims when they send their data through a single point in clear text. It's just not safe to use them unless you are certain who owns the server, so do you yourself a favour and stay away from the anonymous proxy lists, you'll be much safer.

Free Proxy Site

A proxy site is a web page that will allow you to access websites unhindered by restrictions and content filters. These sites enable you to bypass your own Internet Service Provider and browse through the proxy web site. Just type the web site address you would like to visit in the form they provide, and start browsing.
They not only allow you visit blocked sites; they also allow you to have online privacy. The website that you visit can detect your IP address and then use it to find more information about you. Free web-based proxy sites enable you to hide your IP address by acting as an intermediary between your computer and websites. When you use one of this, the websites you visit will see a different IP address that can't be used to track you.
These sites are one of three proxy tools. The other two are Desktop Software which requires downloading and installation; and Virtual Private Network (VPN) services which also require installation. Proxy sites are the easiest to use of the three, as no set up is required. The drawback however is that most of these sites have traffic limits and are easily blocked. Because proxy sites are so easily blocked there is a constant need for new ones. As such there are numerous websites from which users can source and keep up to date on active free proxy sites.
Proxy lists are the easiest way to keep track of free proxy sites. However be careful in getting the right list as there are some proxy lists that do not have legitimate, updated and fresh lists. A genuine proxy list contains a list of proxies that are new and have constantly been maintained and updated for its users.
The best way to find a legitimate proxy list is to check on the credibility and do random checks of the proxies in the list. It is therefore wise to bookmark a proxy list and check it regularly for updates on your favorite proxies. This also makes them easily available when the need to use them arises.

Types of Proxy Servers

We all use computers and surf the internet, even though many of us are not familiar with the technology or the terminology. Most of us have heard the word proxy, but we are not sure what exactly it means and why we need it. It is a term in the network technology which refers to a server that acts as a medium through which demands from clients are passed on to the sources.
For example, if you are looking for something, like a website, or a link, you connect to the server and it supplies you with the service from another source. The job of a proxy server is to filter the requests that come from clients.
For this purpose it may use the IP address or the protocol. If the demand you have is legitimate and validated the server will provide it for you. The server might change your request or provide you with the needed data without even waiting for a response.
  • Free proxies
The idea was implemented for the first time in the period when distributed systems were still a novelty, and they were used as a tool that would decrease their complexity and make them simpler. Nowadays most servers are connected with the web and enable you to browse the web easily.
There are few different kinds of proxies and each of them serves a different purpose. Most of them are only sub-types of the forward type. The forward proxy is the most commonly used one and it does submit the requests from a network to the internet source.
The most popular forward proxy types are, the free proxies. These servers are available to anyone that has a valid internet connection and there are millions such servers on the internet. If the user doesn't want to reveal his/her identity, i.e. the IP address, they will use a free proxy when surfing the internet.
  • Reverse proxy
The reverse proxies. These servers are often called surrogates. This server does seem like a regular server to the visitors. They send the requests of the visitors to the sources. Afterwards, the responses are sent as they are from the proxy server and not from the source.
These servers are usually placed near web servers, and all of the requests that are supposed to come to those servers go through the web proxies. The term 'reverse' is used as an opposition to forward, because the reverse server is much closer to the web server and it is responsible only for one or few web servers.
These proxies can serve more purposes, and they are often used to accelerate the encryption. In order to be able to encrypt a website, the web proxy server must have a Secure Sockets Layer (SSL). It can also be used as a balance for the load which is sent to more than one web server.
  • Performance enhancing proxies
Another way to enhance your internet security is through the use of performance enhancing proxies. This is designed to be able to deal with exact issues and problems that links might cause. It is commonly used to ensure a better performance of the TCP.

What is a Proxy Server?

What is a Proxy Server?

A proxy server is a computer that offers a computer network service to allow clients to make indirect network connections to other network services. A client connects to the proxy server, then requests a connection, file, or other resource available on a different server. The proxy provides the resource either by connecting to the specified server or by serving it from a cache. In some cases, the proxy may alter the client's request or the server's response for various purposes.

Web proxies

A common proxy application is a caching Web proxy. This provides a nearby cache of Web pages and files available on remote Web servers, allowing local network clients to access them more quickly or reliably.
When it receives a request for a Web resource (specified by a URL), a caching proxy looks for the resulting URL in its local cache. If found, it returns the document immediately. Otherwise it fetches it from the remote server, returns it to the requester and saves a copy in the cache. The cache usually uses an expiry algorithm to remove documents from the cache, according to their age, size, and access history. Two simple cache algorithms are Least Recently Used (LRU) and Least Frequently Used (LFU). LRU removes the least-recently used documents, and LFU removes the least-frequently used documents.
Web proxies can also filter the content of Web pages served. Some censorware applications - which attempt to block offensive Web content - are implemented as Web proxies. Other web proxies reformat web pages for a specific purpose or audience; for example, Skweezer reformats web pages for cell phones and PDAs. Network operators can also deploy proxies to intercept computer viruses and other hostile content served from remote Web pages.
A special case of web proxies are "CGI proxies." These are web sites which allow a user to access a site through them. They generally use PHP or CGI to implement the proxying functionality. CGI proxies are frequently used to gain access to web sites blocked by corporate or school proxies. Since they also hide the user's own IP address from the web sites they access through the proxy, they are sometimes also used to gain a degree of anonymity.
You may see references to four different types of proxy servers:
  • Transparent Proxy

This type of proxy server identifies itself as a proxy server and also makes the original IP address available through the http headers. These are generally used for their ability to cache websites and do not effectively provide any anonymity to those who use them. However, the use of a transparent proxy will get you around simple IP bans. They are transparent in the terms that your IP address is exposed, not transparent in the terms that you do not know that you are using it (your system is not specifically configured to use it.)
  • Anonymous Proxy

This type of proxy server identifies itself as a proxy server, but does not make the original IP address available. This type of proxy server is detectable, but provides reasonable anonymity for most users.
  • Distorting Proxy

This type of proxy server identifies itself as a proxy server, but make an incorrect original IP address available through the http headers.
  • High Anonymity Proxy

This type of proxy server does not identify itself as a proxy server and does not make available the original IP address.
